HTML named character entities

Character entities are used whenever a non-US ASCII character needs to be set. This could be in visible text or in tags and other elements which are normally invisible to the end user.

We do this because text written on a computer uses the character encoding of that computer's system. This works OK if the text is only read on that specific machine, or one very similar, but the same text—when made available via the Internet—may not appear the same on another computer. For instance what the author sees as a quotation mark ” may appear to the reader as an accented captital E: É

There are several methods of setting special characters, but they all have in common that the code starts with an ampersand—&—and ends with a semi-colon—;. Some methods use numeric codes, but it is often easier to remember and read named entities such as the ones below.

Character entities are case sensitive, so that É gives É but é gives é.

To use a character entity, replace the character with the entity reference. It may be that the HTML editor being used will do this conversion or have some other easy method of inserting these codes.
